Over 100 IB students from George Washington High School (Denver, CO, USA) worked together on April 23, 2008, to restore portions of City of Chennai Park to a more natural condition. The students planted over 2000 plugs of native grasses around the mounds of a small prairie dog village and they planted twenty juniper trees around the perimeter of the park's natural area. The students worked with team leaders from Denver Parks and Recreation and with parent volunteers. The students attended a lecture about the importance of prairrie dogs to the high plains ecosystem before leaving for the service project.
In addition to the prairie dogs, the park is frequented by other wildlife, including coyotes, foxes, and hawks. It is adjacent to a river greenbelt that connects downtown Denver to a state park southeast of the city. City of Chennai Park is 1.5 miles southeast of George Washington High School.
