Alter Weiner: Holocaust Survivor

Soumis par nicolena le mar, 09/06/2009 - 4:08am.

Alter Wiener is a holocaust survivor who visited my school to tell us his story. His story was very moving, and astounding. When he was finally liberated from the concentration camp, 18-year-old Alter weighed 80 pounds, could fit one hand around his whole thigh, and was the only surviving member of his 123-member family. It is mind-blowing that he was able to keep going through so much pain, and that he was able to survive.

What happens to war/ trauma survivors like Alter Weiner once they get home? They are left with no family, no home, no possessions. Many suffer the injustices of war and oppression, and once they are liberated, face another large problem: poverty. Alter Weiner came to the U.S. with a huge lack of education, no job, and no money. What was he to do? E had been stranded in grueling concentration camps during fundamental years of life. Many trauma survivors face similar issues, and it is our position to help them. We need to create support groups and hold fundraisers to help severe trauma survivors get back on their feet.

I think its really for hard

I think its really for hard for concentration camp survivors like Mr. Wiener to get back into everyday society, because like you said they don't learn the necessary skills to live and function in society. another issue that i think they face is that people don't understand what these surviors have gone through. Survivors are put back into normal society and their supposed to act normal. There needs to be more support systems for these wounded survivors so that they can function and work in everyday society.

I live in Quito-Ecuador a small and beautifull country next to Colombia.  In the north part of Ecudor, near Ecuatorian-Colombian boundaries there is a very cruel reality among young boys who have been literally kidnaped from their towns by guerrilla groups.  At some point of their lives, some of these boys (the ones who survive) become either an active part of guerrilla or run away from it. The second ones face a very cruel situation because of their lack of education, family bonds and money; so what is left for them to do is to become thieves.  This is not only a very unfair reality for them but also for the rest of the society, that is unable to insert them as positive and productive members of it.
