World Poverty

After an introduction on global distribution of World Poverty as portrayed by World Mapper, we discussed the Knowledge Issues associated with the topic. Questions like "Who determines the poverty line?" and "Do we need a poverty line?" were aired.

The students in our IBDP class discussed their perspectives on poverty in Pakistan, USA, Qatar, Tunisia, Syria, Canada and India.

The Economics of Poverty is thought provoking. If the ten richest people gave one tenth of their annual income to support the "poor" then these charities (NGO's) would have enough financial resources to eradicate poverty.

They probably wouldn't even miss it still with ninty percent to spend!

Hi William It's great

Hi William

It's great that you've been addresing global poverty in the classroom. Your statement about the richest people in the world giving away a tenth of their income certainly gives pause for thought.

Do you have a reference for this or a source of figures? It's a statistic I'd like to be able to use, and I'm sure this is something people in other schools would also find useful.
