Our class is MYP 5V from The Mercedes Benz International School in Pune, India. Upper school get together for assembly every Thursday. Each year group is given a chance to present their assembly on a topic. This term different aspects of the IB Community theme ‘Sharing our humanity’ were given us. We had to present the theme and design an activity which could shed some light on our topic. The challenge was to find the best possible way that we can apply to our learning process in or outside school community.
The theme given for our assembly was ‘Education for all’. So, we as a class brain stormed on different ideas and came to a conclusion that we would do our assembly on communication by people who are missing one of their senses. Our objective was to sensitise other students in our school towards those people who are special in a way that their other senses are so developed which helps them to cope with daily life situations in society. Four members of our class, along with our home room teacher visited a local blind school. At the blind school, we interviewed the students as well as their teachers. We asked them questions to get a better insight on their lives and the way in which they face their day to day challenges. We wanted to find out about how education helped them to prepare them for the rest of their lives.
After interviewing the students, our whole class was extremely touched. To empathise with children who can’t see, we as a class decided to undertake the challenge of blind folding ourselves just for a lunch break to see how it felt so that we were able to sensitize to them more. Blind folding ourselves was a challenge on its own, we realized the difficulty and challenges visually impaired are faced with. This activity was really an eye-opener to all of the students in the class. Many of us were able to go through an entire meal, but only because of the help and support of our friends but the rest of the class were not able even to go through a meal being blind folded. This made us realize how lucky and privileged we are to have all our five senses, each and everyone of us after this assembly have learnt to be grateful and appreciate every aspect of life without complaining and cribbing about the things we don’t have. We shared the whole experience with our school in our school assembly as we had recorded them with our camera.
Our assembly was much appreciated.
