As part of the 2004-5 Grade6 Exhibition at Luanda International School in Angola, students identified thatdue to having to walk long distances children at a local orphanage were notattending school.  As a result grade6 worked to fundraise in order to purchase the land next to the orphanage andbuild a four classroom, one bathroom, school that would then be considered apublic school, and so eligible for local government support with teachersalaries, resources and facilities.

During the project studentsgained an understanding about the complexity of helping others, and realized thatchildren of differing socio-economic backgrounds also have similar interests, values and ambitions.

As of 2008, the school thatwas started by the grade 6 students in 2005, provides an education for studentsat the orphanage as well as an additional 960 students from the local area.  In 2005 the project was awarded theRobert Blackburn memorial award for a sustainable project in an African IBOschool.

The attached video (10minutes) was created by the grade 6 class to document the process they wentthrough.  For further informationcontact
