I write from Rome, Italy; I am the mother of a 16 years old italian student very resolute to leave Italy to study abroad, possibly in China and in HongKong in particular... He has a fluent english and has been studying chinese for two years.
A traditional italian mom would get mad with such a son, but despite a certain anxiety I think he could really improve his knowledge and education getting an IB Diploma abroad. He is looking - a bit late, I know - for a boarding school, as our family will remain here in Rome, or maybe for a different solution, like a chinese family that can host him.
I would really appreciate any suggestion about this matter!

Apply for an exchange
Apply for an exchange program? I have a friend who was interested in doing the same thing at the age of 16 and applied for an exhange program, got in and was actually funded to go to school in Toyko. They even found her host families and paid for her family to go up and visit her on special occasions.
If your son goes and talks to someone in his current school, like a guidance counselor of sorts I'm sure that they can provide information on programs such as those that exist internationally.
