Choosing a college/university

Choosing a college/university

Hi everybody! I suggest we share information about choosing and applying to colleges. Information on admission requirements on ibo.org (country information) in lots of cases haven't been updated for ages (like ten years old, from 1998 or so). For example I heard that in USA there is no colleges where IB diploma alone is enough to qualify, they all require you to take national tests...So if anybody have information to share - please do. How are you choosing a college?

Hi,

ur not right at all, there are some colleages where just IB diploma is enough, but these universities suck.....so if u wanna go let's say to Harvard, MIT, and so on....well, all good schools, u have to do stupid SAT reasoning test, and SAT subject tests form 2 or somewhere from 3 subjects.....I think that IBO should do sth with this....because I change my old school and went to IBdp because I was told that IB diploma is EVERYWHERE accepted...especially by TOP universities....as I see now, it is NOT TRUE......

Hello encantado,

Your recent post to Polina regarding acceptance of the IB diploma leads me to believe that you are confusing college acceptance with college admissions requirements.

IB diploma holders are welcome to apply to thousands of universities around the world, but by no means does this guarantee automatic acceptance. Each university will have its own admission requirements, and often the IB diploma will form only part of this requirement. Ultra selective universities often take less than 10 percent of all applicants. One needs to be realistic with his/her chances; there is research to suggest that having an IB diploma in many cases will increase your chances of gaining access to some universities, but of course nothing is a guarantee. I would hope that the main purpose that students undertake the diploma
is to learn and to be prepared for higher education, not simply as a
sole means to get accepted to a prestigious university.

All IB students who plan on pursuing post secondary education should carefully consider (and plan for) specfic entrance requirements that individual institutions may have over and above the IB diploma. Additionally, one must consider that universities may have certain overall point total scores (out of 45) and/or certain HL course scores in specific subjects for certain programs of study. Doing your homework ahead of time will certainly cut down on the chances of not gaining acceptance to the college of your choice.

The IB continues to work with governments and universities to ensure appropriate recognition policies are in place for IB diploma holders. This work is ongoing, and updated policies will continue to be placed on the public website. I would highly recommend that students interested in a particular college or university contact the appropriate admissions department (usually available as links from the IB page) to find out more specific up-to-date information.

Sincerely,

how am i choosing a college? well, first of all i'm mexican so, my biggest dream is to study in UNAM Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. my father studied ther, so...

anyway, i want to study environmental science. in my hometown, the local college gives this carreer but i'd rather like to study at UNAM. but i'm not really willing to leave my family and friends behind.

i guess the best way to choose college is first of all make sure of what you want to study, and then research a lot in order to know which college is the best giving the carreer you want.

if you need anything, let me know. good luck!

Hi Polina!

I'm just starting my college applications myself as a senior in the IB Diploma. I've found that doing the IB is a HUGE plus when you're applying to universities. Last year my school had a bunch of universities visit us from Canada and the United States. The Canadian ones offered many scholarships to students doing the IB Diploma. The general rule was that if you had a point score of 32 or higher, your tuition would probably be covered by a scholarship. The really cool thing was that, if you qualified, you could receive even more money in grants and such which you were free to spend on whatever you want. (Sounds unbelievable right?)

In America, I've been told that when universities receive applications from students from various educational backgrounds they will make IB students their first priority. It makes sense once you've seen their applications because they ask questions about your extracurricular activities (which you will be doing because of CAS) and the rigor of your subject/class choices - If your doing IB I'm sure you know what a load of work it is in comparison to A-levels, AS, or their equivalents. I've found that some universities count any IB subject as an equivalent to an AP (advanced placement) course in the American system. They also ask you to write quite a few essays (which seem incredibly simple after you've written your Extended Essay).

Basically, it helps. A lot. And in some cases you get to skip the '101' college classes because you will have already covered the material in your HL subjects.

If you're planning on going to the States for uni then I would recommend that you go to www.collegeboard.com and look into the Common Application Site. Most universities accept the common app.

It's true that you have to take the SAT which is a pain. I've taken it twice and am planning on taking it again in October. But you have to do it if you want to get in so better to just study hard and get it done.

 Good luck!

I change my old school and went to IBdp because I was told that IB iploma is EVERYWHERE accepted...especially by TOP universities....as I see now, it is NOT TRUE......

hi mi name is eutimio n i'm a junior at George Washington H.S. in chicago illinois in the U.S. i've been in the IB program for 3 yrs since freshmen. the IB does look good on your college application. i'm planning on going to University of Chicago and the only other things i need is a high ACT score n to write 2 essays. y tambien puedo hablar espanol. Cool

How people are chosing University?

First of all were looking at quality, place and price.Kiss

It's better to study in the same continent. If your a good student maybe you will get a grant, so you can go to good university even if your not so rich.

IB program is realy cool, in many good universities it count's, but there are many schools where it doesnt count or if you got 100% counts only 90%.l Thats a realy sad thing....
