A statistical exercise for Year 12 mathematicians to support the Peace and conflict theme

Submitted by JH on Sat, 19/09/2009 - 2:06pm.

A workbook of personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan

One sheet on Iraq, one on Afghanistan and a third providing some support material  for teachers

Use a small list of data to find the mean and standard deviation using the two formulae for the variance

Using the larger data lists, calculate these stats using calculators and/or excel

Construct a frequency table of the Iraq data and calculate the stats and compare with the list stats

Does summarising the data into a frequency table introduce significant changes?

Which is easier to use?

Summarise the overall results for the two populations

Draw a histogram perhaps

Discuss the results and the limitations of the conclusions

Ask the students to summarise their activity and findings

Many thanks for this,

Many thanks for this, JH. It's very good to see an example of an important global issue being addressed in the Math class.

Math teachers may also like to look at a new publication from "Facing the Future" .

Real World Math: Engaging students through Global Issues  deals with foundational algebra and geometry, for the Middle Years Programme, using material relating to global issues.
