On October 8, 2008 Hayes Elementary families, friends, students, staff and community members took part in a community wide education exercise entitled, INTERNATIONAL WALK TO SCHOOL DAY. Hayes partnered with Safe Kids Minnesota and FEDEX to raise community awareness about pedestrian safety. Parents were encouraged to walk to school on this day with their children. On the way to school they were greeted by FEDEX and Safe Kid Minnesota volunteers who passed out stickers and high fives. Once they arrived at school they were invited to participate in a continental breakfast and a ceremony in which the school crossing guards were recognized for their outstanding service to Hayes Elementary and to student safety. Each year some 600 children between the ages of 0-14 lose their lives in pedestrian accidents. Another 37,000 are injured. Today's event sought to educate the entire community about the importance of pedestrian safety. Having representatives from law enforcement and local governing officials made the day one to remember
