In Mercedes-Benz International School (here in Pune, India) each class takes turn doing a morning assembly every week. We are assigned
a topic, and this time we were asked to design an activity to engage us in an
aspect of the IBO communal theme of ‘sharing our humanity’. We then have to
present our idea/activity on the morning assembly. Our class’ assembly was
about global poverty. We wanted to do something interactive. After a lot of
brain storming in homeroom time, we finally came up with the idea of calling representatives
from each class and asking them what they thought about what other people had
to say with regard to ’poverty’. We took the quotes from the IBO website. The
assembly was a hit but we still needed a good ending. We suddenly hit upon this
idea of “SAS”,Save a snack”. We have kept a
jar in our homeroom so instead of students buying from the tuck shop; we could collect
money to feed a group of poor migrants who have camped not very far from where
our school is situated. They lack basic needs of water, food, clothing and
shelter, We felt we could make the change happen for them. In fact we announced
at the assembly too! for all to contribute. We really tried hard for our
assembly and the turn out was pretty good. We wanted to make the difference and
we did!!

Thanks Tue. It's good

Thanks Tue.

It's good that the students found out more about poverty and were then able to take a simple, direct, practical personal action.
