IB marks Earth Day, 22 April 2010.

Earth Day is 22 April. Starting in a small way 40 years ago, it now involves a billion people finding out more about our shared planet, and taking action. Following a resolution in 2009, the UN has now designated 22 April as Mother Earth Day.

IB is inviting IB World schools to mark Earth Day by taking part in activities and teaching the specially written IB global lessons on or around 22 April.

IB global lessons will be available for

Theory of Knowledge in the Diploma programme (also relevant for Ecosystems and Societies, Geography and Biology)

Humanities in the MYP.Lesson plans and materials will be posted to this site.

There will also be links to relevant websites, and suggestions for all programmes of action that schools and individuals can take.

Will there be global lessons

Will there be global lessons for the PYP?

Global lessons for MYP and

Global lessons for MYP and DP Theory of Knowledge can be used as single stand alone lessons. Lessons of this type do not fit with the nature of the PYP, with the programme conmposed of units of enquiry.

While there will not be global lessons as such for PYP, there will be ideas for how the PYP can incorporate Earth Day themes within units of enquiry.

Several businesses have

Several businesses have offered freebies last Aprill 22 for the Earth Day celebration. Earth Day freebies 2010 was really a brilliant idea, where numerous companies are offering discounts or free products in conjuncture with Earth Day to try and draw business to their stores. Of course I am sure they're also trying to promote a healthier environment. Either way, with all of the criticism out there about this, I can't help but wonder why individuals care and get so worked up? The outcome of a business taking advantage of a holiday to try and get sales is: a lot more revenue in our economy helping to stimulate it; a lot more revenue equals a lot more job; and they are nevertheless getting individuals to contribute to the environment by recycling or whichever gimmick they have going on. So how is there a down side at all?
