The Global Campaign for Education (GCE) is a civil society movement that aims to end the global education crisis. In April each year GCE coordinates the Global Action Week on education. This includes an event which aims to raise awareness about the benefits of education, and the disadvantages suffered by those who do not have access to basic education. Last year GCE organized the World's Biggest Lesson, which inspired the IB global lessons. This year's event is The Big Read, encouraging young people all over the world to read stories relating to the need for education.
Materials available in French, Spanish, Arabic and English
From GCE website:
What is the Big Read?
774 million adults can not read this, and 75 million children who are not in school will be denied the chance to learn to read and write.
After reading a story in the Big Read we are asking you to write your name for the millions that cannot.
We are collecting the names to deliver to governments during the week of the 20th to 26th of April 2009 to demand that they take action to make sure that everyone has an education.
