call for action for earthquake victims, sichuan, p.r. china

dear all, as u learned from the news, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck China's Sichuan province on Monday, less than 100km from the provincial capital of Chengdu. it s estimated that over 50k people, including many schul-age kids, died in the disaster.

Mathematics modeling in Global Issues sessions.

At the American International School Lusaka (Zambia), across the whole high school, one hour a week is dedicated to global issues discussion.   This can take the form of articles reading / round tables, guest-speakers, develop new CAS/C&S projects, etc.  This year a group of very talented students have started to approach this session under a maths/sciences lens.

Visiting Teachers from Mali connect with American PYP students and community for greater International Understanding

Developing pen pal relationships wasn't enough to really begin to understand similarities and differences between Kalanso School in Mali and Brandon School in Atlanta, Georgia.  So in an exchange program between the schools, two teachers from the Malian school traveled to Atlanta for a 5 week immersion experience in the Fall of 2008.  Students, teachers, as well as other community members gained a greater understanding and appreciation for the Malian people and culture, while the visiting teachers experienced American education and culture first hand.

Raising Money for the Epilepsy Foundation

During the week of February 9th - 13th, Fridley Middle School students in Ms. Maki's class were busying selling valentine cookies to raise awareness and money for a fellow student and the Epilepsy Foundation.  The students raised over $770 as well as selling out of the cookies.  The parent of the student the money was raised in honor of was quoted stating the following,
