This term, Years 7 and 8 have focussed their Community and Service on alleviating hunger in sections of the Surabaya community.
On World Hunger Day, year 8 students organised "freeze mobs" around the school to raise awareness amongst their fellow students. At 1pm, the groups "froze" for one minute. They then distributed brochures, they had previously made, to other students, to seek donations of staple food products for distribution to street communities.
At Branksome Hall in Toronto, Canada, we have used the Community Theme and its 6 parts to guide our community service actions. Many of these themes are also in line with the United Nations Development Goals, which we also incorporate. Last year, we took on the "Fight against Poverty" supporting a number of local and internation organizations working to end poverty. We also took on a number of awareness campaigns around this issue.
What is poverty?
Do we have a moral obligation to help with poverty?
If so, how can we do so, as individuals, as a class, and as an international community?
Think about what would happen if there wasn't enough energy . . . there would be no light to turn on when it got dark . . . there would not be any hot water for the shower or heat for your house in the winter . . . no gas or oil to drive the car . . . so there are lots of reasons we should save energy.
Well, hello IB friends.
We are a new IB DP school. We would like to do a webcast of a lesson on Global Poverty on October 30th at 2 pm Canadian time.
We are having an assembly of our IB students and potential IB students at which time we are going to teach a couple of lessons ourselves. Then we would like to link into the www and webcast a lesson from somewhere else ie anywhere out there.
What do you think. Interested?????
The next issue of IB World would like to report on the IB global lessons on poverty due to take place in October. Of particular interest is how students respond to the issue of poverty, and any actions taken within schools as a result of the lessons.
